SoftBank: eCommerce, Healthcare, FinTech In LatAm | PYMNTS.com

SoftBank will add $1 billion this year to its $5 billion Latin America Fund introduced in 2019, adding to last year's $1.6 billion, Bloomberg reported on Friday (Feb. 14).

Its investment in Latin America this year will target eCommerce, healthcare, FinTech and other industries, as it looks at about 650 firms in the region. SoftBank has so far earmarked $100 million to $150 million to fund 17 companies and two venture capital firms.

As Walmart' s online sales grow, the retailer has seen another number grow, too: Its e-commerce losses.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer is spending heavily to compete against Amazon . It's seen that pay off with significant sales growth, especially in its grocery business. Walmart's e-commerce sales in the U.S. grew by 41% in the third quarter — its strongest quarter reported so far in fiscal 2019 — and the company estimated online sales would grow by 35% for the full year. It will report earnings for the fourth quarter Tuesday.

GGV Capital says mom-and-pop shops can boost e-commerce in emerging markets – TechCrunch

Despite the rapid growth of e-commerce in India, Southeast Asia and other emerging markets, the vast majority of retail transactions there still happen offline in small stores that also serve as neighborhood hubs.

Companies that GGV has already invested in under this thesis include B2B e-commerce platform Udaan and Telio , bookkeeping app KhataBook and social commerce startup Shihuituan (also called Nice Tuan) in China.

GGV managing partner Hans Tung says the mom-and-pop shop thesis means looking at consumers' shopping habits across countries and understanding why they are different from a historical and social perspective. During his career, Tung has observed e-commerce develop in markets including the United States, China, Japan, Taiwan, India, Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Alcohol's three-tier system slows ecommerce and dates the industry

Regulations on alcohol sales in the US have been in place since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. The system has heavily impacted alcohol since the rise in popularity of ecommerce.

There are many issues with alcohol's online presence, but the complicated selling process only makes it more difficult for producers.

Ecommerce analytics company Profitero said online alcohol sales could explode anywhere from USD $7-$15bn in the next few years, noting that "ecommerce is making an impact on just about every industry imaginable, and alcohol looks set to be the next sector to be disrupted by the continued shift to digital." ​
