DULUTH, MN-- Next week you may start to notice red curtains going up in Duluth storefronts. This is a sign that the Northland is officially kicking off the holiday shopping season!
November 16, the annual Storefront Window Display and Lighting contest presented by the Greater Downtown Council will begin.
Duluth businesses will hang red curtains in their windows to hide assembly work in preparation for the holidays.

Visitors to the Downtown Waterfront area can vote on their favorite holiday window display for a chance to win items from downtown merchants.

Thieves are increasingly targeting ATMs amid the pandemic and prompting many businesses to move them inside where would-be robbers can't get to them. In one instance, surveillance footage captures a crew of thieves pulling an ATM out from its spot in front of a New York deli via a chain attached to the getaway van. They loaded it up into the back and sped off. Fernando Mateo, a spokesman for the United Bodegas of America, told Inside Edition that the damage to the storefront cost $10,000.

The program is aimed to help provide more opportunities to shop safely. On October 28, 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the Open Storefronts program. Building on the success of the Mayor's Open Restaurants and Open Streets program, Open Storefronts will provide safe spaces for small businesses to conduct business in the challenging economic environment while advancing Mayor de Blasio's Recovery Agenda.

What To Do With All Those Empty Storefronts
Though all businesses have taken a financial hit during the coronavirus pandemic, the non-essential business shutdowns have put many retail shops in a tough spot. Since the crisis began, an increase in bankruptcies has left the commercial real estate landscape in a constant state of vacancies.
The idea, like many, came during a brainstorming session between several HLW architects, designers and strategists. "In early spring, we found ourselves bombarded by an overwhelming amount of piecemeal solutions to a problem we didn't know much about at the time so HLW decided to take a step back and discuss the broader implications of the pandemic," explains the firm's director of interior design Pantea Tehrani.
