For centuries, the relationship between companies and people was purely transactional. Companies would produce and promote a product that customers would purchase and consume. Under this arrangement, brands had complete control of every aspect of the consumer experience. And consumers had no way to share their feelings towards the brand.
However, the explosion of social media and digital devices in the 21st century has reversed the balance of power. Today, it's ordinary people, not company CMO's who are dictating how and where they engage with brands. In this new era of people powered marketing, a brand is no longer what companies tell people, but instead, what people tell their friends. That's why some of the world's innovative companies are investing in building communities, not customers.

Hour-long waits meet customers at Las Cruces Walmarts
LAS CRUCES – Lines of customers at the open Walmart locations in Las Cruces have doubled in length since the beginning of the week, likely a response to the order closing the Rinconada Boulevard location Wednesday.
Long lines at area big-box stores were seen Monday due to an updated state public health order limiting capacity inside to 75 patrons. That health order is in effect through Nov. 30.
Wednesday, the New Mexico Department of Health served a closure order on the Walmart on Rinconada because the facility recorded four rapid responses within a two-week time period. Operation is suspended through Dec. 2.
