Buoyed by consumers using omnichannel services, such as buy online pick up in store and curbside pickup, large chains report strong online sales growth in the third quarter.
A new Digital Commerce 360 analysis forecasts top North American retail chains will end the year with a 76.8% growth in ecommerce—the highest rate among the four types of merchants. Crossing $330 billion in online sales, chains grew fast this year in large part thanks to big retailers like Walmart.com Inc., The Home Depot Co. and Target Corp., which stayed open throughout the pandemic and have seen an uptick in buy online pick up in store and curbside orders.

Shopify wants consumers to gift ecommerce sites this holiday season
More consumers are stuck at home during the recent surge of the coronavirus pandemic. And ecommerce platform provider Shopify is betting the extra time on their hands will prompt some consumers to stop procrastinating and follow that business dream they have long talked about. To capitalize on this, Shopify this week launched Gift A Business to encourage consumers to buy an ecommerce site for friends or family this holiday season.

Finally: After resisting doing so for years, TJX Companies this week said it will put its HomeGoods division into e-commerce sometime next year. Begrudgingly late, it seems.
The giant off-price conglomerate has achieved remarkable success with its almost pure-play physical store strategy, outperforming most of the rest of the retailing business handsomely over the years. A few years back it launched a modest online operation for its Marmaxx brands (TJ Maxx and Marshals) but outside estimates are that digital represents perhaps 2 percent of the company's overall approximately $40 billion in annual sales.

Home Depot plans to battle harder for the MRO ecommerce market
The market for maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) products is a big one—with $55 billion in annual sales, according to some industry analysts.
The MRO products market also is becoming a battleground for B2B ecommerce as some of the largest ecommerce companies and distributors—including Amazon Business, W.W. Grainger Inc. and MSC Industrial Supply Co., among others—are out to become the largest digital seller.

Security researchers are warning of a spike in cyber-attacks against retailers this year which may impact the coming Black Friday and holiday season shopping spree.
Imperva’s State of Security Within e-Commerce report was compiled using data from its various security products.
It noted several attack trends this year likely to have been influenced by the greater numbers of shoppers heading online during COVID-19 lockdowns.
