Dallas Fed president on the mood in the Fed’s Zoom room - Marketplace

Kai Ryssdal: Do me a favor would you, and give me a sense of the mood inside the room — or inside the Zoom, I suppose — Tuesday and Wednesday. The Fed is, it seems to the lay observer, a bit more optimistic than it has been in the past couple of months.

Robert Kaplan: Yeah, I think the vaccine has played a big role in increasing our optimism about next year. We're still — around the room, we're very concerned (and I’m very concerned) about the next three to four months, though. We think in the first quarter of 2021, you’re going to have either flat growth, or you could even potentially have slightly negative growth in the United States.

Why hasn't Congress fixed unemployment insurance? - Marketplace

The unemployment insurance system in the United States is 85 years old; its last major overhaul was in 1976. But those reforms more than 40 years ago left many issues unresolved, even though congressional commissions have studied them twice since then.

Kai Ryssdal: So when the economy started going south back in late February, early March, and those of us who don’t study the labor market and unemployment saw the crater that was happening, I think a lot of people were caught unawares. Were you surprised at all, that the unemployment system sort of got overwhelmed?

Inheriting China policy, Biden will have issues - Marketplace

"I have heard some pretty amazing stories," said Nicole Bivens Collinson, president of international trade and government relations at Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, PA. Among her clients as a trade lawyer are U.S. companies that do business in China. She recalled one of them, a manufacturer.

"When they tried to invest, they were promised they would have great access to the Chinese market, eventually," but they were required to work with a Chinese partner.  And there was another catch. "They were told, however, that when they initially invested that 90% of the goods must be exported. So that's what they did. They began manufacturing exporting 90% of the goods," under the impression that eventually they could sell into China.

Which essential workers should be prioritized for vaccines? - Marketplace

Federal guidelines consider almost 70% of Americans to be working in essential industries . So there are now a slew of companies and trade groups making their cases to federal and state authorities.

“There’s no doubt that there’s going to be a healthy fight over who should be prioritized when it comes to access to vaccines,” said Geoff Freeman, CEO of the Consumer Brands Association.

His organization is fighting for packaged goods workers who keep things like toilet paper and cleaning supplies on shelves.

Mall Santas are doing things a little differently this year - Marketplace

The Mall at Green Hills in Nashville, Tennessee, is still piping in Christmas music, and Santa is in the building. But there’s no line this year. Families just show up for their time slot. And kids don’t sit on Santa’s lap. Instead, they perch on boxes more than six feet away.

“ What do you want Santa Claus to bring you for Christmas?” asked Santa, who also goes by the name Keith Auston.

It’s hard to hear the kids’ answers through the mandatory masks. “Tell you what, you can let your mother know and she can let me know,” he said.
