Hoboken, New Jersey, Dec. 29, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- According to a new study from LendEDU , a personal finance company based in Hoboken, New Jersey, 63% of Americans have taken on a record amount of credit card debt due to both holiday shopping and the pandemic recession.
This includes 75% of Americans who have lost their jobs because of the coronavirus pandemic and are still unemployed. The study from LendEDU also found 55% of consumers are losing sleep over the amount of credit card debt they have amassed due to holiday shopping coinciding with an economic crisis. For reference, LendEDU found 2020 holiday shopping combined with the pandemic recession led to an average credit card debt balance of $2,150.

Shopping malls were struggling before COVID-19 and now have more empty stores.
For generations, malls were a type of town square, a one-stop shop for restless teenagers and busy parents wanting to pick up gifts, fill out wardrobes or just get out of the house.
Stores struggled across the board in 2020, as local officials ordered all but those deemed essential to shut their doors or limit the number of customers to slow the spread of COVID-19.
But malls were particularly hard hit during the pandemic. The temporary shutdown of movie theaters, gyms and restaurants that were helping shopping centers stand out from Amazon and other online sellers dealt them a significant blow.

Initial readouts of the holiday-shopping season are starting to trickle in, and it looks like not all retailers joined in the festivities.
Online sales jumped 49% from 2019 levels, and accounted for nearly a fifth of all sales. Furniture was the big winner, rising 16% overall year over year, while apparel slumped 19%, continuing a pattern we've seen throughout the pandemic, with people spending more on their homes and less on their wardrobes .
