Retail chains get a boost from increasing ecommerce sales

Buoyed by consumers using omnichannel services, such as buy online pick up in store and curbside pickup, large chains report strong online sales growth in the third quarter.

A new Digital Commerce 360 analysis forecasts top North American retail chains will end the year with a 76.8% growth in ecommerce—the highest rate among the four types of merchants. Crossing $330 billion in online sales, chains grew fast this year in large part thanks to big retailers like Walmart.com Inc., The Home Depot Co. and Target Corp., which stayed open throughout the pandemic and have seen an uptick in buy online pick up in store and curbside orders.

Why Tony Hsieh was an ecommerce pioneer

Zappos launched in 1999, the same year our company founders Jack Love and Kurt Peters launched Internet Retailer. I was the founding editor of the magazine then and remember calling Hsieh and asking for an interview on start-up web-only merchants, and he graciously agreed to answer my questions.

I don't remember all of the details from that interview, but I do remember that he told me that Zappos would be around for the long haul.

The reason: They were on to building a company culture and customer service model unlike anything else around.

Conversational Commerce Is Revolutionizing Ecommerce

Chris Messina, the innovator behind social media hashtags , coined the term "conversational commerce" in 2015 , describing it as "utilizing chat, messaging or other natural language interfaces to interact with people, brands or services." As the number of brands offering undifferentiated products increased, it gave rise to the paradox of choices wherein consumers are unsure what to choose.

With an added advantage of being a customer-service outlet, this method allows conversation with customers through chats to ultimately provide a wholesome shopping experience.
