The Belmar shopping center, one of Lakewood’s most prominent retail developments, is in foreclosure, Jefferson County documents show.
The debt holders on the property have filed the necessary paperwork to force a sale under the terms of the deed, the Oct. 26 trustee’s notice says. A public auction date was set for Feb. 25, according to the public trustee.
Belmar opened in 2004, an open-air shopping district designed to serve as a defacto downtown for Lakewood . It took the place of a defunct retail center, the former Villa Italia mall at the southeast corner of South Wadsworth Boulevard and West Alameda Avenue.

Carbondale's town trustees gave the thumbs-up Tuesday night to the new Carbondale Center Place mixed-use development near the intersection of Colorado Highway 133 and Main Street.
The plan calls for 76 residential rental units, a three-story expansion of the existing Sopris Self-Storage business and 10,000 square feet of commercial/retail space.
It was approved on a 6-1 vote of the town Board of Trustees following a public hearing at the board's regular Tuesday meeting.

Kent Karber, an attorney with Holland and Hart law firm who specializes in commercial real estate and represents a lender on the Belmar property , said shutdowns as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic are likely playing a role in the shopping center's financial struggles.
9NEWS reached out to the shopping center's general manager as well as Greenwich, Connecticut-based investment firm Starwood Capitol, the company that owns Belmar, to determine what the foreclosure could mean for shoppers and employees. They have not yet provided a statement detailing the future of the shopping center.
