Pandemic could mean new housing for those experiencing homelessness - Marketplace
Homelessness advocates across the country are feeling pretty hopeful right now. And, weirdly, it’s mostly because of the pandemic.
“I'm much more confident about our ability to reduce the number of homeless people, at least in the short run,” said Nan Roman, chief executive of the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
That’s because COVID has resulted in a tidal wave of federal money directed at helping the roughly 580,000 people without stable shelter.
Queenly raises $2.3M for its dress marketplace – TechCrunch
One of our favorite companies from the most recent Y Combinator batch has closed a seed round. This morning Queenly announced that it has closed a $2.262 million round, following its $800,000 pre-seed raise. TechCrunch covered the company in February , noting that the company was building something akin to the StockX for women’s formal wear.
Queenly runs a marketplace that allows individuals and small stores to resell dresses after they’ve been worn, allowing for more women to access at a lower price point the items they want to wear to a prom, quinceañera or pageant. And as the service could help reduce net clothing waste, it could have a positive environmental impact as well.
All kinds of materials are getting more expensive for builders - Marketplace
We’ve been talking a lot lately about the inflation that’s likely as the economy recovers from the pandemic recession.
We're seeing it in the consumer price index, which measures what we pay for stuff, and also in the producer price index , which measures what businesses pay for materials they put into their finished goods; in March, it was up 4.2% year over year, the biggest jump since 2011.
But it's not just lumber, up 200% year over year, said economist Robert Dietz at the National Association of Home Builders. "Just about all input prices are rising right now in the construction industry."
Floyd Launches Circular Marketplace for More Sustainable Consumption of Their Products |
Simply put, if someone returns a product or a piece is found to be less than perfect at the warehouse, the company will sell it at a reduced rate, up to 50% off.
The program is a larger-scale and digitized version of Floyd's Shed Sale, where over the last three years, the company would sell products that had been quality-controlled out for a discount at their warehouse in Detroit. Not only does the program keep the products from being trashed, but the lower prices also make quality furniture more accessible. Often, Kyle says, those events had a line around the block.
AI faces warnings, scrutiny from FTC, EU - Marketplace
The Federal Trade Commission issued a strongly worded post Monday, warning companies against unfair or deceptive practices in their use of artificial intelligence as well as violations of fair-credit rules. It told companies to hold themselves accountable for their algorithms or "be ready for the FTC to do it for you."
Ryan Calo: As I’m reading through it, my eyes are getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And I’m just sort of marveling at the language that the staff attorney has used. But basically, it’s a shot across the bow for those people who are using and selling AI systems, warning them that if they exaggerate claims about AI, or if they sell AI that has a racially discriminatory effect, that they should expect scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission.
Climate change may quickly affect the global economy, report finds - Marketplace
A new report from Swiss Re, one of the largest insurance providers in the world, issues a dire warning about climate change: that rising temperatures, higher sea levels, falling crop yields, and wildfires are all likely to reduce global wealth significantly by 2050. According to the report, climate change could eliminate as much as 14% of the global economic output in the space of 30 years.
Some countries will be affected more than others, said Jason Shogren, a professor at the University of Wyoming. “If you're in Africa or in Latin America and your primary engine for your economy is agriculture or fishery or forestry, you're going to be impacted a lot more by climate,” he said.
