So, what did you buy with your stimulus check? Retail sales in March blew past expectations , soaring nearly 10 percent as the latest round of federal relief funds trickled into bank accounts. Restaurants and bars saw a 13 percent bump in business, and sales of clothing and accessories rose 18 percent — people are getting out and about and need new clothes after a year of sweatpants.

In 2019, Santa Barbara city workers retrieved 20 shopping carts throughout the city, which increased to 538 in 2020, a reflection of the worsening crisis of homelessness in Santa Barbara County.
In response, the Santa Barbara City Council recently adopted and approved the passage of a new Abandoned Shopping Cart Ordinance, which went into effect March 16.

The Lipstick Index, as it's known, was a phrase coined by Leonard Lauder, chairman of the board at Estee Lauder, in the early noughties when it became clear in times of economic crisis, sales of color cosmetics - in particular lipstick - soar as an affordable way to treat yourself.
Last year, sales of cosmetics plummeted. With bustling make-up counters in department stores closed for much of 2020, sales of designer brand cosmetics were down by more than 40% according to market research firm NPD , which equates to a loss of £500 million (around $689 million and AU$902 million).

With COVID-19 vaccination campaigns now in full swing, more Americans are getting out and about again, and many are returning to once vacant indoor malls.
Foot traffic data from the retail analytics firm Placer.ai shows that visits to 50 major malls in the U.S. rose by 86% in March compared to one year ago.
Of course, March 2020 was when the pandemic first began to spread like wildfire in the U.S., and so a better comparison for last month's data might be with March 2019. Compared to that month, foot traffic in U.S. malls is down 24%. Nevertheless, Placer analyst Ethan Chernofsky said in a blog post that March foot traffic was 44% greater than in the previous month, February, and indicates that a "return to the malls is in full swing.
