Shopify exec: Omnichannel commerce is the new norm for the retail sector - Business Insider

As consumer desire grows for alternative pickup and delivery options, proximity has the potential to become a retailer's most powerful selling feature. By the end of April, 26% of Shopify's brick-and-mortar merchants in English-speaking geographies were using some form of local pick-up or delivery solution, compared to 2% at the end of February.

In a time when in-person conversations are no longer the norm, chat has increasingly become a retailer's most successful method of replicating the offline experience online. Traditionally used for customer support, the pandemic has heightened the importance of chat as a marketing and sales channel, and we believe this will continue in 2021 as new consumer behavior solidifies.

Shopify's pandemic boost means everyone in the chain wins | Grit Daily News

E-commerce has grown 32 percent since Q1 of 2020 and 45 percent since 2019, according to the US Department of Commerce. According to a study from Adobe, in just a couple of months, online shopping in the US achieved between 4 and 6 years' worth of growth. April and May e-commerce levels were higher than what retailers achieved during the 2019 holiday season (the most important weeks in American retail).

Among the winners of this noteworthy shift are big names like Walmart or Amazon. But not only. An impressive number of small businesses migrated online trying to survive the pandemic. New stores created on Shopify rocketed by 71 percent in Q2 2020 compared to Q1 of 2020.

The aspirational entrepreneurs surveyed estimated it would cost $40,000 to start their business. According to Shopify's research, aspirational entrepreneurs expected to spend only $17,000 in their first year.

Why T-Shirts Promoting the Capitol Riot Are Still Available Online - The New York Times

The move was initially lauded but it soon became clear that the technology company, which powers more than one million online shops, was still fueling plenty of other sites with merchandise promoting the president and goods emblazoned with phrases like "MAGA Civil War." Apparel with similar phrases and nods to QAnon conspiracy theories also remained available on e-commerce sites like Amazon, Etsy and Zazzle.

These companies have largely been built with scale and ease of access in mind, with scant oversight of what vendors were actually selling. But questions about the businesses have emerged as many rioters donned what amounted to a type of uniform that could be purchased online. This included shirts with certain phrases or illustrations printed on them, and flags that not only supported President Trump, but promoted a civil war, conspiracy theories and debunked election claims.
