Greater Topeka Partnership encourages shopping local on National Use Your Gift Card Day

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – More than $3 billion in gift cards go unused every year, according to Glenda Washington, chief equity and opportunity officer for the Greater Topeka Partnership.

“In January it’s generally slow. So, if we can use those gift cards, go into the shops and buy local if you can,” Washington said. “If you have a local gift card, make sure you use those first.”

The day encourages people to spend the gift cards they received for the holidays. This helps boost revenue to local businesses, because typically people spend over the amount of their gift card, Washington said.

Podcast: Measuring the change in Valley shopping habits due to COVID-19

WESLACO, TEXAS – A shift in shopping habits brought about by the coronavirus pandemic has boosted sales tax revenues for smaller communities in the Rio Grande Valley.

Matt Ruszczak, executive director of Rio South Texas Economic Council, analyzed these developments in an 2020 end-of-year report. His report was based on information released by the Texas Comptroller's Office.

"The COVID shift, looking at these numbers, is definitely real," Ruszczak said. "The fact that people have changed their shopping habits reverberates in these numbers. The fact that they are spending their money in these secondary and tertiary markets, and not as much in the primary markets, gives value to these numbers."

Denver Broncos Vic Fangio's NFL Draft Shopping List for George Paton Includes LB 'With Foot

There was buzz toward the end of the 2020 season that head coach Vic Fangio was not only going to be kept but was expected to have a bigger role and say in the NFL draft. Then John Elway stepped down as general manager and the Denver Broncos hired George Paton to succeed him.

Fangio was involved in the Paton hire and in fact, the ex-Minnesota Vikings personnel lieutenant was Fangio's No. 1 candidate to get the job per 9NEWS' Mike Klis. Although technically speaking, both Paton and Fangio still answer to Elway and are considered "side-by-side in the organizational power structure" this year, Paton will ultimately hold a higher spot in the Broncos' hierarchy when push comes to shove. However, the expectation is that Paton and Fangio will be "working partners.
