It's not easy opening a restaurant during normal business times — so imagine opening two in the midst of a pandemic. That's exactly what Sergio DeCiantis, along with his father Carlo and friends Matthew Tesoriero and Patrick O'Halloran did when they recently opened Guac Shop Mexican Grill in Seaford — and on Monday, Guac Shop in Jericho with partner Joseph Sparacello.
Positive message shared via empty store - Picayune Item | Picayune Item
An empty storefront in Picayune has been transformed into an oversized thank you card to medical personnel and essential workers who are putting themselves at risk during the pandemic, along with a thank you to families sheltering at home to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Rhysing owns five-year-old Ritualcravt in Wheat Ridge, a metaphysical and witchcraft store where you can buy everything from ritual oils—to enhance clarity or protect yourself against envy and dressing candles to amplify your personal power or promote good health—to tobacco-free herbal cigarettes to soothe emotional unrest.
Scenes of an empty New York: 'For rent' signs, deserted streets and homeless havens
Some of those stores that have scaffolding during façade repairs have become makeshift shelters for the homeless.
More high-end stores throughout Manhattan, such as Sephora and Tiffany, have boarded up their stores to prevent break-ins. Other stores and restaurants have signs that say closed, or some even say, “closed for good.”
Few people walk the streets, masks strapped on securely so not to spread the virus unknowingly – experts say many people don’t even know they have it.
South Africa’s shuttered storefronts a sign of economic pain
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — It’s been more than three weeks since Moses equipped a kitchen, Yambu welded a gate and Mboni sold almost everything. For their shops and others on Soweto's deserted Luthuli Street, it could be weeks, if ever, before they see business again.
South Africa has been on lockdown except for essential services to combat the coronavirus pandemic. If the results so far appear promising — crime at its lowest level in years, a downtown Johannesburg seemingly free of air pollution — there is a toll. Small businesses like these cannot operate.
