Coronavirus Takes Over Political Advertising - The New York Times

Coronavirus Takes Over Political Advertising - The New York Times

For much of the past six weeks, political campaigns were reluctant to focus too heavily on the coronavirus outbreak. Though some outside groups started to criticize President Trump's handling of the crisis, the virus was largely considered off-limits to many campaigns, which worried about politicizing the unending tragedy.

Now, more than 50 percent of all political ads on TV are about the coronavirus, the first time that a majority of ads were focused on the outbreak, according to Advertising Analytics, an ad tracking firm. There were 33 unique ads centering on the virus that aired last week, spanning the presidential, Senate and congressional elections.

Trump Airs Another Campaign Ad At Briefing, Produced By White House Staff - National Memo

Donald Trump used time during his regular COVID-19 briefing on Monday to play a campaign ad for himself. Trump said that the video had been put together by White House staff — a possible violation of federal law regulating the election activities of federal employees.

Under fire for downplaying the coronavirus' risk and doing little to prepare for the pandemic, Trump made reporters watch what was effectively a campaign ad. "We have a few clips that we're just going to put up," he said, before playing a video containing clips organized and edited to blame the media for minimizing the threat of the pandemic and tout Trump's response.

Do news publishers need special financial support because of the virus ad slump?

Online traffic has soared, but advertising and print circulation revenues have collapsed as brands pull spend and block ads from appearing next to Covid-19 content, while retailers have shut.

Many publishers, including City AM, the Evening Standard , Guardian Media Group, Newsquest, PA Media, Reach, TI Media and Time Out, have furloughed staff, reduced salaries and cut back on print distribution.

Publishers have appealed to politicians for help. Culture secretary Oliver Dowden has written to 100 leading advertisers, urging them not to block ads on trusted news sites , and the government and Newsworks have agreed a coronavirus ad campaign , worth tens of millions of pounds, to run across newspapers for the next three months.

Nine Inch Nail Army recruiting commercial | Connecting Vets

The moment has finally come when I have to accept that I'm getting old and am no longer one of the cool kids.

* * *

The band which mainstreamed the industrial rock genre back in the late 1980s is led by Trent Reznor, who today collaborates with musician Atticus Ross. I have been going to Nine Inch Nails concerts since I was a teenager, they're one of my all-time favorite bands. Reznor and his bandmates put on a great show, if anything, he's only gotten better with the passing years. But let's be honest, a NIN concert these days isn't the raucous affair it once was. The fan base has gotten older.
