Back-to-school shopping is off to a slow start - NewsChannel 3-12

The back-to-school shopping season is off to a slow start as uncertainty swirls around if and when children will go back into classrooms, according to America’s biggest retailers.

But in the midst of the pandemic, school districts nationwide are struggling with setting an exact date to bring students safely back to classrooms. Some are going straight to a remote learning option at the beginning of the school year.

Walmart and Target said on earnings calls this week that families were delaying purchases as a result.

Apartment and retail development rises from old shopping plaza in Fairfax City, Va.

The 50-year-old Fairfax Circle Plaza shopping center has been rebuilt into a 21st-century mixed-use development, including 400 apartments, in the City of Fairfax. The former shopping center at the intersection of Routes 50 and 29, approximately two miles from the Vienna Metro station for Orange Line service, was razed and turned into a transit-oriented, walkable community with bus access.

Scout on the Circle, developed by Combined Properties, includes three buildings, two of which include five levels of apartments above 29,000 square feet of street-level retail space at 9450 Fairfax Blvd. The retail space, which is approximately 80 percent leased, will include cafes and shops. A Giant Food store, scheduled to open this summer in a stand-alone building that is part of the development, will be the first new grocery store in the City of Fairfax in more than three decades.

Sandy Springs shares concepts to redevelop North End shopping center - Reporter Newspapers

Sandy Springs' Northridge Shopping Center could be remade as a mixed-use community ranging from 58 to 718 housing units and buildings three to 10 stories tall, according to redevelopment concepts presented by consultants in a virtual meeting on Aug. 13.

The presentation to the North End Revitalization Advisory Committee was the first of four such concepts for shopping centers along Roswell Road commissioned in December by the city as part of its quest to spark redevelopment of the North End. Major goals of that process are to see how mixed-use developments with residential, retail and commercial space could work at each of the sites.

The findings also reveal that when buying groceries online, more than one-half (53%) of shoppers say it is either challenging or extremely challenging to make sure a product meets the goals of their diet or wellness program. Here's what you'll need for back-to-school shopping

This year's back-to-school shopping list is different than the usual trip to the store for a backpack, binders and pens.

Computer laptops and Chromebooks, printers and home furniture for the kids are at the top of the list now as parents get ready for virtual classes yet again. For those returning to the classroom next month, hand sanitizers and face masks are a must-have.

"Kids are going to school, but they're not going to school in the traditional sense," said Ross Steinman, a consumer psychologist and professor at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. "Back-to-school shopping will look very different this year due to COVID-19."
