Facebook Debuts Facebook Shop, Ups Ecommerce 08/26/2020

Facebook on Tuesday debuted Facebook Shop -- a new section of its flagship app for users to find new businesses and shop for various products.
The move was a no-brainer in light of the pandemic, which has led to a surge in ecommerce, according to the social giant.

Facebook recently began testing the service in the United States, and launched a complementary shopping destination on Instagram, dubbed Instagram Shop, in July.

eCommerce Prompts UK Retailers To Slash Jobs | PYMNTS.com

Retail employment in the U.K. has dropped 45 percent since May in the sharpest fall it has taken since the 2009 recession, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) reported.

According to CBI, internet sales seem to be encroaching on regular physical retail, with U.K. internet sales rising 46 percent in the year through August. Those sales are expected to keep rising, predicted to be around 48 percent in September, the CBI report stated.

COVID-19 pandemic accelerated shift to e-commerce by 5 years, new report says – TechCrunch

As the COVID-19 pandemic reshapes our world, more consumers have begun shopping online in greater numbers and frequency. According to new data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index , the pandemic has accelerated the shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by roughly five years. Department stores, as a result, are seeing significant declines. In the first quarter of 2020, department store sales and those from other “non-essential” retailers declined by 25%.

The report indicates that department stores are expected to decline by over 60% for the full year. Meanwhile, e-commerce is projected to grow by nearly 20% in 2020.
