It turns out 2020 may have been a good year for the anime industry - Marketplace

Despite the pandemic, anime fans turned out in droves for the theatrical premiere of “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train,” a film based on the incredibly popular Japanese animated series and manga. The movie became the biggest box-office hit in Japan ever, at time when the global theater industry is struggling to survive.

At the same time, streaming services like Netflix continue to invest heavily in anime production , and the two of the largest anime-focused streaming services announced a merger for nearly $1.2 billion.

Law in the ... LLCs need operating agreements

Somehow, we've finally made it to 2021, and at least a few readers may have formed new business entities with the Secretary of State that have effective dates of Jan. 1, 2021. Among other benefits, the formation of an entity this date can simplify federal and New Hampshire state filings. And if the owner of the new entity is an individual, the entity is, or ought to be, a single-member LLC.

However, the members not only of most new single-member LLCs but also of most existing ones – there are about 40,000 of them in New Hampshire – should have written operating agreements. This may seem counterintuitive, since, by definition, single-member LLCs are totally controlled by the individuals who are their members. So you may well think that an agreement between a single-member LLC and its owner is, for both legal and practical reasons, meaningless.

Mapping internet access: No clear data on haves and have-nots - Marketplace

Earlier this month, the Federal Communications Commission announced the results of a $9 billion auction to provide high-speed broadband to homes and businesses that don’t have it. The money comes from something called the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund, and this is just the first chunk of money to come from it. The FCC is planning to allocate billions more.

Nicol   Turner Lee:  The fact that we cannot get accurate, clear data, you don't even know where to start when it comes to serving individuals within their community or within their homes. This is problematic, and I would say even more amplified as part of the coronavirus outbreak, because without that data, the absence of it makes it just so topsy-turvy and so unclear on how we begin to solve the digital divide.

Inside the NFL cheerleaders' fight for fair pay - Marketplace

NFL cheerleaders have been underpaid for decades, sometimes earning as little as $5 per hour — less than minimum wage — while the players they root for earn millions. That's starting to change, thanks to a series of lawsuits brought by cheerleaders in recent years. So far, 10 out of 26 NFL teams with cheerleaders have been sued for wage theft, unsafe working conditions, sexual harassment and discrimination.

The film's director, Yu Gu, told Marketplace's Andy Uhler that these practices aren't just illegal — it's part of a bigger problem with professional sports leagues sidelining women's roles and reinforcing the gender pay gap.
