Will these FICO changes affect your credit score? - Marketplace

The people who figure out credit scores are changing their calculations in a way that further lowers the scores of people with riskier borrowing. The best credit risks could see their scores increased even more.

AnnaMaria Andriotis: Credit scores have been rising in recent years. That has been a result of an improving economy, but there have also been questions about whether scores have been rising because of negative information that has fallen off of people’s credit reports. In recent years, things like tax liens, judgments, certain collection accounts had been removed.

The boss of NYC's subways is departing. How'd he fare? - Marketplace

This week, the head of the New York City subway system announced that he’s resigning. Andy Byford took office almost exactly two years ago, after the system went through a “summer of hell” when rampant delays, cars trapped between stations and a derailment took a toll on the system’s image. Byford came to New York with a reputation for fixing transit systems in London and Toronto.

Ask a New Yorker what they think about the subway, and you’ll probably hear something like what we heard from Peter Tarr, a commuter passing through Grand Central Station.

Confluent Offers Apache Kafka as a Service on the GCP Marketplace

In a recent blog post , Confluent announced the general availability of Confluent Cloud on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Marketplace. Confluent Cloud is a fully managed Apache Kafka service, which removes the burden of its users to manage Kafka themselves.

In April last year, Google announced a strategic partnership with several leading open-source centric companies, including MongoDB, DataStax, and Confluent. Since then, the products of these companies, such as Confluent Cloud, are available as managed services on GCP. By signing up and providing a credit card as a payment method, users could get started with Confluent Cloud on GCP – yet billing was separate from the consumption of other GCP services.

Central banks are searching for new tools - Marketplace

The tools these central banks have relied on for years aren’t working. Inflation is stubbornly below their targets, and economic growth is sluggish.

Central banks in the U.S. and Europe use a key tool to control inflation — the raising and lowering of interest rates. But that hasn't been so effective lately, and the European Central Bank is trying to find out why and whether it needs to factor things like climate change into its economic models. ECB President Christine Lagarde said she's also looking for answers from the public.

Will Brexit damage British tech? - Marketplace

Brexit is almost upon us. On Jan. 31, Britain will formally leave the European Union, and although it will remain subject to the bloc’s rules and regulations for a transition period until the end of the year, the U.K. will begin disentangling itself from an intimate 47-year-old economic embrace.

So-called “remainers” have predicted disaster for the country as it pulls away from its largest single trading partner.

But one sector that’s so far defied the gloom is technology. Britain's tech industry is way ahead of its European rivals: London has 45 unicorns (startups worth at least $1 billion) compared to 10 in its closest continental competitor, Berlin. Industry insiders say London is likely to maintain its dominance.
