Earlier this month DTC footwear brand Allbirds debuted in Japan, about nine months after it started selling in China through Alibaba's online B2C marketplace Tmall.
As Allbirds mulls where to go next, international president Erick Haskell spoke at the National Retail Federation's conference in New York this week about how the brand tackled the world's largest market and what it has learned since.
Haskell said China is the first market Allbirds didn't enter directly as a DTC player, and brand awareness was "extremely low, to be quite frank."

CAIT Plans To Launch Individual E-Stores For Traders
Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the traders' body that has been raising concerns over ecommerce platforms not complying with FDI norms, said on Thursday (January 16) that it has completed a pilot in Madhya Pradesh to create individual e-stores for traders.
The same will soon be launched at a national level. “Ecommerce is a rapidly growing future mode of business. That is why we are aligning the trading community with ecommerce by creating individual e-store of every trader in the country,” said Praveen Khandelwal, secretary-general, CAIT.

U.S. Holiday Ecommerce a Record $142.5B, Up 13%; Every Day Over $1B
Ecommerce spending in the U.S. for November and December posted a new record at $142.5 billion, up 13.1%, according to data from Adobe, while Salesforce pegged worldwide ecommerce spend at $723 billion, an 8% increase.
Smartphones accounted for 84% of the 2019 holiday ecommerce growth in the U.S., Adobe said. Retailers also benefiting from the popularity of buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS), up 35% and surging to 55% above the season average in the seven days leading up to Christmas.
