In the early 2000s the Westmoreland Central School District was looking to improve high school academic results. Despite best efforts, innovative approaches and extra supports, some students still struggled to complete high school.
District leaders turned to the data, and their search and ultimate answers illustrate the power of data analytics, or the ability to gather information, interpret it and make informed decisions.
Westmoreland learned that the strongest indicator of high school success was a student's grades on his or her first report card in ninth grade. Those grades were accurate predictors of a student's future success or struggles.

Dayne: Situational football is what separates a good coach from a good planner. Traditional football logic says one thing, analytics say another. We are still relatively young in the analytics movement and I don't think we often see coaches make bold decisions in important moments simply because the numbers say so. Here are some of the situations where many coaches should rethink what they normally do.

After four weeks, the college baseball season and the 2020 CWS have been cancelled. However, many players around the country were off to hot starts and today we recognize the junior hitters who came of the gates swinging a hot stick.
To determine this we have broken down hitting into three categories: Plate Discipline , Hit Ability , and Game Power and combined them to calculate an Analytics Score . Plate Discipline is a measure of how well a batter controls the strike zone. Hit Ability simply measures a batter's ability to flat-out hit and reach base while Game Power is straightforward: did the player produce extra-base hits, getting to the power he may show in batting practice.
