The Ever-Evolving E-Commerce Journey

From the way we consume media, music and more, it's clear the world is a completely different place than it was 25 years ago. E-commerce is no exception. Whether it’s socks, stocks, software, etc., chances are we can get it online. In 2019, global e-commerce sales amounted to $3.53 trillion, and are projected to grow to $6.54 trillion in 2022, according to Statista .

What many don’t know is e-commerce dates back more than half a century. It was introduced more than 50 years ago when the first major e-commerce company, CompuServe, was founded in 1969. The idea of buying things online was still somewhat of an anomaly until 1995, when a company called "eBay" burst onto the scene, and Jeff Bezos shipped Amazon.com's first book order, unleashing a flood of online shopping.

Germany Ecommerce Report 2020 - Business Insider

If the coronavirus pandemic has produced any winners in the retail sector, digital merchants are among that number.

The outbreak has been cataclysmic for Western Europe's retail sector, as most stores selling nonessential goods were forced to close in March, and gradual reopening did not begin until May. We estimate that overall retail sales in the region will drop by 9.9% this year, to $3.776 trillion, or €3.372 trillion.

By contrast, ecommerce sales are on the rise. The strict lockdown led many consumers in Germany to shop more online, or to buy goods like groceries and medicines digitally for the first time. We expect retail ecommerce sales to rise 16.2% this year, and total $92.33 billion (€82.46 billion), compared with $79.47 billion (€70.97 billion) in 2019.

When Will Big Beverage Alcohol Retailers Get Serious About eCommerce? - Wine Industry Advisor

According to Nielsen, alcoholic beverage eCommerce has seen ten consecutive weeks of triple digit year over year growth since the beginning of the Coronavirus crisis. While it is growing from a relatively small share dominated by smaller beverage alcohol retailers, this crisis could well be the catalyst to change that forever.

"The big retailers who are mostly responsible for the $70 billion of wine sales have been abdicating the digital market to the others, which are mostly smaller players," says Zac Brandenberg, DRINKS Co-Founder and CEO.

How The Rapid Growth Of Ecommerce Will Changes Brands' Approach To Media

Ecommerce’s first implication for brands, Tiltman notes, is that it forces consumers out of usual purchase habits and into new ones. According to a Kantar study, during lockdowns, 56 percent of households with kids have tried new products, which they’ll continue to buy.

Effective marketing in the age of ecommerce also requires marketers to get closer to the supply chain.
