Shopify has been enjoying a period of rapid growth as it aspires to become what an executive has described as the “ world’s first retail operating system .”
But it’s not outgrowing the small sellers that have made it one of the most popular ecommerce platforms in the world.
“Micro-sellers, solopreneurs, SMBs — however you choose to refer to them — they are the foundation of Shopify,” explained Lolo Oyelayo-Pearson, Shopify’s director of UX.

After the year Shopify Inc. has had, you might expect its co-founder and CEO Tobi Lutke to sound a little…cheerier.
Riding a global surge in pandemic-related e-commerce traffic, Shopify – which makes the software used by more than a million merchants to sell their products online – surpassed Royal Bank of Canada to become Canada's most valuable company. It now has a market capitalization of US$177-billion, making it only the second Canadian tech company, after Nortel Networks, to reach such heights.

RageOn, a Cleveland-based firm that allows users to make and sell "photo-realistic clothing," also features an enormous amount of cat-related material on its website : t-shirts, mugs and sweaters. As part of a broader civil suit, it sought an injunction to force Shopify to restore its online sales support system, arguing that it faced financial ruin if not given access to the e-commerce platform.
In a decision released Tuesday, Ontario Superior Court Justice Peter Cavanagh denied RageOn's injunction request, ruling that the firm can seek e-commerce support from companies other than Shopify.
