Verisk Analytics is a great investment, this investor says - Cantech Letter

"I think Verisk is a great company to invest in," says Girard, chief financial officer at Liberty, who spoke on BNN Bloomberg on Monday. "We bought this back in the beginning of 2019 and we continue to hold it to this day."

"They're in the data analytic space, and what they're doing is they're helping the actuaries that work at insurance companies figure out how better to price risk. And that's a really important thing going forward because in the past it's sort of been statistical tables and a lot of work that was by hand or manually done within calculations of databases and things like that," Girard said.

So Your Company Isn't Getting the Most out of Analytics and AI. Here's What to Do.

If you pushed a shopping cart down a grocery aisle in the summer of 2013, you might've noticed a curious new snack: Watermelon Oreos . Perhaps you even reached for a package.

The limited-release flavor, alas, was not long for this world. But the data that was collected on who did and didn't purchase it has led to some lasting insights. Namely, a team of researchers led by Kellogg marketing professor Eric Anderson discovered a segment of customers with highly unusual—and highly unpopular—tastes. If these customers purchase your new product, the researchers found , it is likely to fail.

Data Analytics Is the Future of Manufacturing | designnews.com

Manufacturers are beginning to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to support plant optimization. IoT sensors send data on the vibrations and temperature of machines to the cloud where AI algorithms compare the data to a growing database of machine signatures. Each machine has its own vibration and temperature signature. Based on this, the system can predict if a machine is going to break before it does.

Augury is a company that utilizes AI to analyze data from IoT sensors. "Our job is to make production lines more reliable. We offer a full turnkey system for machine health. That includes the connectivity and the data algorithms," Saar Yoskovitz, CEO of Augury, told Design News . " We use one type of sensor with different technologies, including vibration and temperature. It's a holistic system for mechanical and electrical equipment such as drives and motors.

Pinterest open-sources big data analytics tool Querybook | VentureBeat

Pinterest today open-sourced Querybook, a data management solution for enterprise-scale remote engineering collaboration. The company says the tool, which it uses internally, can help engineers compose queries, create analyses, and collaborate with one another via a notebook interface.

Querybook started in 2017 as an intern project at Pinterest. The development team early on decided on a document-like interface where users could write queries and analyses in one place, with collocated metadata and the simplicity of a note-taking app. Released internally in March 2018, Querybook became the go-to solution for big data analytics at Pinterest. It now averages 500 daily active users and 7,000 daily query runs.

NY Mets analytics: Steve Cohen using technological might of Point72

When Zack Scott first joined the Mets as an assistant general manager in December, owner Steve Cohen immediately set up Scott to speak with interesting people from different companies in various industries – most of them unrelated to baseball. The thought here: Is there something a different company or person can offer that will help the Mets in some way?

"It's just (Cohen's) entrepreneurial spirit of, 'How can we think outside the box and try to be resourceful in non-traditional ways?'" Scott, now the acting general manager, said in a recent phone interview with NorthJersey.com.

Cynthia Frelund 2021 NFL mock draft 2.0: Analytics-based picks to maximize wins

We knew we were in for an active start to NFL free agency, but it has been even more exciting than I anticipated -- and it likely isn't done surprising us yet. Add in some interesting pro days, and the picture of how the events of this spring will shape the 2021 regular season is starting to come into focus.

That said, it seems like the right time to fire up my next mock with just under a month to go before the 2021 NFL Draft. And remember, my analytics-based mock is based solely on a contextual, data-driven model that aims to do one thing: maximize each team's potential to win as many games as possible in 2021, and only trades that have actually occurred are included.
