John Pappas owns Keene Auctions (formerly Knotty Pine Auction Service) at 96 Dunbar St., and he's launching his retail space with Klaus Jahnke of Richmond.
Taking over the former home of Brown Computer Solutions, next to Subway, the store is tentatively called The Village Peddler; Pappas said he's still waiting for confirmation of the name's registration.
The shop will accept consignment items, scrap gold and silver and help people broker sales. Pappas said there will be a "wide range of about 200 years of different stuff" for sale, including jewelry, home decor, rugs, paintings, pottery, glassware, stoneware and garden statuary.

A year ago, I asked a longtime publisher friend to assist in producing a book honoring Dad’s legacy. He was immediately on board and instructed me how to use a Kick-starter Campaign to fund the project. I raised the needed funds for design, production and printing.
Candidly, I panicked. I resigned from my position at WJZ-TV as a graphic designer in 1993. The industry has changed dramatically since then. I did not feel comfortable designing the book. I scolded myself for being too stubborn about the content. And yet, I knew Dad would want his book to minister to readers.

Proposed Tax on Vacant SF Storefronts on Track to Narrowly Pass | KQED News
Proposition D , known as the vacancy tax, has been one of San Francisco's most contentious battles this election season. Empty storefronts pepper neighborhoods all over the city, and complaints have mounted over the years.
As of Friday afternoon, the measure appeared likely to pass, with about 69% support , inching past the necessary two-thirds majority threshold. But with many vote by mail ballots still being counted, the contest remained too close to call. Continued updates to voting results can be found on KQED's election results site .

UN Studio enlivens a storefront in Amsterdam with flowing
Completed in December 2019, The Looking Glass is a four-story mixed-use renovation for developer Warenar Real Estate that offers a thoughtful solution for merging contemporary design within the centuries-old Museum Quarter of Amsterdam . Designed by Dutch architectural practice UN Studio , the approach addresses both the contextual and use demands of the site with finely curved glass panels and well-crafted brick masonry.
The project faces the Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat, one of Amsterdam’s primary retail corridors. Like much of the Netherlands' architectural vernacular, the area is composed of three to four-story structures of sober restraint. Ornament is largely limited to spandrel brickwork detailing and carved wood brackets at the cornice—this is not a setting for ostentatiousness.
