Covid-19 Rewrote the Rules of Shopping. What Is Next? - WSJ

Covid-19 changed the way we shop. The big question now is which of the new habits will stick once the pandemic recedes.

Instead of lining up on Black Friday for a bargain-priced TV, shoppers ordered from home and picked up curbside. Even those who rarely bought online before the pandemic relied on the internet to bring them everything from groceries to pajamas to fake eyelashes.

Some retailers won't be around to find out. Weaker players such as Lord & Taylor and J.C. Penney Co. filed for bankruptcy protection and closed hundreds of stores, while big companies such as Walmart Inc., Target Corp. , Amazon.com Inc. and Home Depot Inc. consolidated their power.

Wissot: A year of binge watching, online shopping and immoderate drinking | VailDaily.com

March 13, 2020 was not just another Friday the 13th. It was the last day that I didn't think about putting on a mask when I left the house and social distance from family, friends and strangers.

I clearly remember what my wife, Alyn, and I did that evening. We were in Denver and a play we had tickets to see at a small neighborhood theater, a block from our downtown apartment, was abruptly canceled. We grabbed a quick bite to eat at a nearby restaurant unaware that it was the last indoor dining experience we would have for months. We ended the evening by going to see an exhibit at the Denver Art Museum.

Why Social Shopping Can Skyrocket Sales For Online Sellers

Covid has completely disrupted the economic landscape but it’s also a time of historic opportunities. Particularly for direct-to-consumer (D2C) businesses that take advantage of emerging social shopping trends.

Unfortunately, many retailers are stuck in outmoded ways of doing business. They view social strictly as a sales channel. And constantly pushing products are off-putting to social followers and fanbases.

Social media shouldn’t be used exclusively as a one-way messaging platform where brands are constantly selling merchandise. A smarter approach is to engage, interact, entertain and form friendships with audiences, viewers and followers.
