After making her popular caramel apples for all of her friends, family members and students (she was a piano teacher), Ekola set up shop on the front lawn of The Cake Ladies’ bakery during Christmas in Historic Springboro. To her complete surprise, she ended up selling over 600 caramel apples. It was then (and, well, with a bit more planning), that Ekola was able to make it to this point in her career.
“I wasn’t even thinking forward,” said Ekola. “All I wanted to do was make some cash for Christmas. What happened was, after that, people found me. Requests kept coming in, and then I eventually ordered more supplies. Then I thought that I could really try this.”

Pop-up art gallery takes over an empty storefront on Mission and 23rd - Mission Local
In years prior, the rectangular-shaped space at 2675 Mission St., near 23rd, used to be home to a clothing store. Once a western outlet that sold boots and Stetson hats, it was taken over by an urban clothing business called Kick’s around 2013 that offered acceptable prices on throwback 49ers jackets and sneakers.
The space stood unused for most of 2019. Yet in the waning days and weeks of the year, this 2,600-square-foot shop was retooled into something else: an art gallery, workshop, and event space. It's being spearheaded by an artist who thinks art should be far more visible to the public.

Abby Kemble was working at the time when she heard a resounding crash, only to see a Honda CRV plunge through the front of the store. The driver apparently hit drive instead of reverse.
"The sound was so scary I didn't look," she said Sunday. "I put my hands over my head. It was a horrible, horrible, horrible shattering noise. I'm so thankful no kids were sitting at the table. It didn't hit anyone."

As e-commerce continues to pinch at the sales of brick-and-mortar retailers, at least six tenants have thrown in the towel at the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley .
Shoppers frequenting the Upper Saucon Township shopping destination can find these empty storefronts between OshKosh B'gosh and Portrait Innovations; between Claire's accessories and American Eagle Outfitters; next to Fidelity Investments; between Gail Gray Home Furnishings and Design and Athleta; and two on either side of Sweet & Sassy.
Russell County storefront/signage grant program
RUSSELL - Russell County Economic Development & CVB is taking applications for the 2020 Storefront/Signage Grant Program.
This program offers a $2,000 grant towards projects totaling $4,000 or more that include the development or improvement of business storefronts and/or business signage and was designed to help create or enhance the promotion and physical appearance of businesses in Russell County.
A maximum of 7 projects totaling $14,000 are available per year and are funded by the half-cent sales tax for economic development and capital improvements.
