Applying The Marketplace Approach To Moving | PYMNTS.com

It's 2006. "The Departed" is the top movie. The iPhone is a year away. People use beepers for urgent communications. Bush the younger is president. Post-bubble internet startups are showing up with daily frequency, including a travel site called Expedia. A young man in the moving van business in Miami named Meyr Aviv takes note of Expedia. The site aggregates all the available travel, enables actual reservations and purchases.

Aviv studied Expedia and thought the general model could work for his business. Moving, he knew, could be a difficult customer experience full of potential fraud and rude service. Could he create an Expedia for moving?

Why Dealerships Should Use Facebook Marketplace

In 1995, Craigslist changed the way individuals bought and sold personal items, including used vehicles. Craigslist replaced newspaper classified ads as the go-to spot for posting cars for sale.

Dealerships quickly took notice of Craigslist, listing their vehicles and stocking up on used car inventory. On a list of the most impactful technologies for the automotive industry, Craigslist is certainly near the top.

Today, a new platform is quickly replacing Craigslist as the preferred personal listing site: Facebook Marketplace. Like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace allows anyone—including dealers—to sell used vehicles. It has become an indispensable source of new leads for dealerships around the country.
