Brick-and-Mortar, E-Commerce, & Target Outlook 2020 - Business Insider

Target's brick-and-mortar retail spaces have been drawing in consumers with different interests and demographics for years, due to its wide array of appealing merchandise and affordable price points. The retailer's decision to funnel dollars and time into its e-commerce business seemed to be a wise one, as their online component alone is poised to increase 24% to $8.34 billion in 2020.

The future looks bright for Target, as it has already surpassed three competitors to become No. 8 on the latest ranking of the nation's top retailers. Amazon, as expected, also has little to fear this year when it comes to competition in the online market, as it is projected to capture 4.6% of total US retail sales.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Council Post: The Six-Point E-Commerce Checklist Every Retailer Needs

By 2020, it should be clear that no retailer can afford to be without an online presence. Even those who still thrive with their brick-and-mortar locations can't risk letting their competitors enjoy the World Wide Web uncontested.

In fact, many of the retailers we've worked with over the years have found success by following a very simple e-commerce checklist.

Ecommerce innovation means creatively destroying your business

Allowing any business to stagnate is dangerous. Most leaders are comfortable with reflecting on past successes and failures and committing vaguely to instituting improvements but don't venture too far outside the lines. I believe real innovation demands destruction of a creative kind: a consistent breaking down to build something even better.

* * *

Sometimes innovation can be as simple as changing a single process. In my first vice president role, I got in trouble with the facilities department for taking my office door off its hinges so I could be more accessible to my team. It was worth it. That one action changed the communication dynamic and shifted dialogue from a vertical model — when it was only "open" in the sense that it suited managers — to truly collaborative and allowing for regular cross-organization discussion.
