First Friday in downtown Gadsden has become a signature event, drawing large numbers of people to enjoy music, visit food vendors and local restaurants, and local retailers staying open late to welcome them in.

But Downtown Gadsden Inc. Executive Director Kay Moore said because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event won’t be back for June.

"I want to be careful," Moore said, before hosting an event that brings 10,000 people to gather in a few blocks of Broad Street where it is not possible to social distance as recommended by health care officials.

Council Post: Building Direct Relationships Between Brands And Customers

Consumer packaged goods companies (CPGs) were traditionally unable to develop direct relationships with their customers. They prioritized their relationships with retailers above all others. After all, retailers designated shelf space and actually bought their products. Consumer advertising wasn't envisioned as a tool to connect with customers, but as a way to convince a consumer to choose one brand's product over another.

In many ways, that model and thinking still exist. However, the boom over the past decade in direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales has CPGs rethinking and reprioritizing their relationships. Consumers can buy deodorant, razors, and cleaning products directly from brands. Even Post, a cereal company founded in 1895, offers D2C sales through their website, although they provision orders through local retailers.
