"The leading economic indicator is … the virus." More than one analyst has put it to us this way. As we try to understand and quantify this unprecedented global economic collapse — and now the attempted restart — we're following key metrics for COVID-19 and the broader economy.

Keep in mind: The tally of COVID-19 cases represents only the ones that are documented. Since many remain untested, surely the real number is higher.
As a patchwork of states start to reopen, businesses that fall into a gray area are wondering when they can reopen. In many places, salons are still shuttered . Bars are mostly closed, too, although restaurants may be allowed to ramp up, depending on the state. “It’s kind of all over the place,” said Elizabeth Milito of the National Federation of Independent Business.
Quite a lot has been going on:
Google Creates Tools, Dedicated TV Marketplace As Streaming Booms 06/12/2020
Google has created a dedicated TV section in Marketplace for publishers and will provide inventory that enables them to reach TV audiences across devices. The idea is to enable marketers to find the deals that best match campaign objectives and simplify the process of finding and securing premium streaming inventory.
The available publisher inventory is displayed graphically so that marketers can discover and negotiate deals. Filters allow marketers to search by geography or streaming device type. Specific publisher profiles enable marketers to explore more data around performance, audience and inventory volume.
How police departments got billions of dollars of tactical military equipment - Marketplace
For decades, police departments have acquired military weaponry like grenade launchers and armored vehicles for little cost through a controversial Defense Department program called 1033. The program has sent over $7 billion worth of excess military equipment to more than 8,000 local law enforcement agencies across the country, according to the office overseeing the program .
As more images emerge of police in riot gear confronting peaceful protesters marching against racism and police brutality, several lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling for an end to the program that arms civilian officers with gear typically used in active combat.
Are people going to reopened stores and restaurants? - Marketplace
Meanwhile, other states are seeing a jump in cases, including Arizona, Texas, Florida and California. A month ago, I talked to folks around the country about whether they were willing to go back to stores and restaurants as they reopened . I checked back in to see how things have changed.
A lot can change in a month. States have relaxed their restrictions, and many of us have relaxed, too.
“We made sure we kind of went not during a peak time,” Adams said. “[We] kind of pulled into the parking lot and looked to see if there was a wait time or anything. It was actually very, very well done.”

A new report from the Federal Reserve this week says debt held by households increased by almost 4% in the first quarter. Much of that increase happened before the pandemic started. But what does that say about where we are headed now?
Some people are digging deeper into debt during the pandemic. Greg McBride at Bankrate.com said about 1 in 6 households reports having more debt now than before the crisis.
A separate report from the New York Fed says the average debt per capita rose to $52,000 in the first quarter, about 3% more than the year before.
